The Center for Empirical Research and Women's Studies was established as an academic concentration at the University of Sana'a in 1993. The Center has become a significant national and regional center for gender-related studies and research. The Women's Studies program derives its focus and direction from the realities and priorities of women in Yemen and other countries of the Arab world. The aim of the programme is to improve the position of women in Yemeni society.

The centre publishes a Journal on Women's Studies, which includes the findings of its researches, as well as the best papers and theses produced by its students.

In order to enhance research, track recent developments in the field, and facilitate international communication, the center has developed an extensive documentation center, complete with computer equipment and internet capability. The center is linked to similar documentation centers in other Arab countries.
