The Women's Studies Center (WSC) of the Chiangmai University combines activism and scholarship. WSC has implemented training programs for rural women leaders and women's studies researchers throughout the 1990s. These training programs aim at stimulating integration of feminist perspectives in empowering women of varying class and ethnic backgrounds and thus gender mainstreaming Thailand's development practices and research leading to policy recommendations.

Despite its roles in empowering Thai women via knowledge dissemination and capacity building activities, WSC recognizes the urgent need for systematic women's studies education. It will inaugurate the M.A. Program in Women's Studies at Chiangmai University in November 2000.
The M.A. program seeks to create an institutional space for enhancing women's studies scholarship on Thai women's issues and feminist experiences in Thailand. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and designed to combine theoretical and methodological advancement made by Third World feminist theorists and the specific historical, political, social, and economic conditions in Thailand that has for long shaped the course of the Thai women's movement and Thai women's studies knowledge.
