Association for Women’s Studies was formed in 1992 by a group of women
faculty members and students of Karachi University’s Women’s Studies
Programme and by women from a cross section of Karachi to promote Women’s
Studies in Pakistan and to act as a catalyst to bring about women’s
empowerment. PAWS was established to provide a forum of interaction and
coordination for those engaged in teaching, research or action for women’s
development nationally, regionally and internationally. Some of the major
goals of PAWS are to undertake participatory/action oriented research that is
sensitive to issues of gender, to identify, re-examine and develop research
and training methodologies which are relevant the Pakistani situation, and to
develop documentation and publication for the promotion of women’s Studies in
Pakistan. PAWS
publishes an academic bi-annual Pakistan Journal of women’s Studies: Alam-e-Niswan
and a bi-annual newsletter Panghat for rural women PAWS is
organized by an advisory committee working and it has a membership of about
450, including academics, journalists, lawyers, business women, medical
doctors, non-professional women, and students. |
