Pakistan Association for Women’s Studies was formed in 1992 by a group of women faculty members and students of Karachi University’s Women’s Studies Programme and by women from a cross section of Karachi to promote Women’s Studies in Pakistan and to act as a catalyst to bring about women’s empowerment. PAWS was established to provide a forum of interaction and coordination for those engaged in teaching, research or action for women’s development nationally, regionally and internationally. Some of the major goals of PAWS are to undertake participatory/action oriented research that is sensitive to issues of gender, to identify, re-examine and develop research and training methodologies which are relevant the Pakistani situation, and to develop documentation and publication for the promotion of women’s Studies in Pakistan.

PAWS publishes an academic bi-annual Pakistan Journal of women’s Studies: Alam-e-Niswan and a bi-annual newsletter Panghat for rural women

PAWS is organized by an advisory committee working and it has a membership of about 450, including academics, journalists, lawyers, business women, medical doctors, non-professional women, and students.
