The Institute of Women's Studies, Lahore, (IWSL) emerged out of the imperative to create a space exclusively devoted to cultivation and dissemination of Women's Studies that takes into account the specific realities of Asian women's experiences and contributions. The Institute has introduced Women's Studies as a discipline in itself for the first time in Pakistan.
Their basic aim is to create an awareness and concern among women not only of patriarchy but of class, race and other oppression.
IWSL aims to address the needs of activists, development workers, human rights' workers, graduate students, professionals, researchers, artists, writers, and those interested in women's issues, who would like to keep abreast with academic developments in Women's Studies without enrolling in an institution in the so-called developed world.

IWSL provides opportunities to take courses and to develop formal academic skills such as systematic reading, writing, critique, research, and analytical understanding. The institute, therefore, fills a vacuum created by the dearth of formal academic training, even as it situates this training within the South Asian context.
The IWSL has designed courses that facilitate rigorous academic study; that encourage activism; and which concentrate on the specificity of women's realities, experiences and movements. The Institute offers quality education, training and gives access to research to large numbers within Pakistan, in Asia and the South generally.
