The Centre for Gender and Development Studies is an outgrowth of the Women and Development Studies groups, which have existed on each campus of the University of West Indies.
In 1993 the Center was established to reflect the commitment of the UWI to institutionalize and support scholarship in the area of gender and development. Its main activities are teaching, research, and community outreach through this work and through projects.
The specific objectives of the Center are: introduction of an integrated, interdisciplinary programme of gender and development studies including incorporation of gender issues into the content of all disciplines within the university, at both undergraduate and graduate levels; generation of research data on gender related issues in the Caribbean; outreach to the Caribbean community including linkages with, and empowerment of, national and regional institutions concerned with gender and development.

The University of the West Indies is a regional institution, serving 14 countries in the Caribbean. There are three campuses located in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. Other centers are located in Antigua, Belize, The British Virgin Islands, The Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Nassau, St. Christopher/Nevis, Anguilla, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent.
The Center has developed international links through academic programs and projects involving universities in the North, Central, and South America, Europe, Indonesia, and The Philippines.
