Four distinct women's studies
organizations in Canada are
cooperating in their membership in WOWS and together select the
representative to the General Assembly.
These are the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women
(CRIAW/ICREF), the Canadian Women's Studies Association (CWSA) and two
Francophone organisations. They are Relais-Femme and Institut Des Chercheuses
Quebecoises. These four groups between them represent a good range of
feminist scholarship across Canada - with different foci.
1) CRIAW/ICREF is a bilingual, non-profit, national
organization with a membership base of approximately 800 and has an Ottawa
office and a national board. It actively supports research through grants,
publications, and research projects. It also houses FAFIA, the national committee
responsible for coordinating Canadian women's participation in the United
Nations Beijing-plus-5 process.
2) CWSA is volunteer-run and
operates at the annual conference of the Social Sciences and Humanities, with
an active conference program and associated meetings. It also puts out a
newsletter.
3) Relais-Femme and
4) Institut Des Chercheuses Quebecoises.
These two Francophone organizations focus on
French-speaking women in Quebec and provide support and services for teachers
and researchers in women's studies.
